how NOT to take shrooms (unless you like nausea & regret)

Hey friend,

I don't know about you, but back in the day, I tried everything under the sun to mask the taste and texture of psilocybin mushrooms.

Don’t get me wrong—I love culinary mushrooms like shiitake, portobello, chanterelles, etc.

But shrooms? Yeah… not so much.

You know you're in for a wild ride when you're holding a thick, psilocybin-oozing (shout out to my boy Dev), gold-capped, blue-bruised mushroom.

And getting it down? That’s the real challenge.

I’ve put them on everything—Port of Subs sandwiches, pizza, PB&J, even a McDouble. If you can name it, I’ve probably tried it.

Because let’s face it: eating shrooms isn’t pleasant.

I know some rare souls actually enjoy the taste, and to them, I say—more power to you!

But for the rest of us, chewing down dried shrooms (even if they’re on a slice of New York pizza) is a challenge.

And if you don’t break them down enough? Your stomach will let you know.

Why Shrooms Are So Hard to Digest

Ever wonder why shrooms are so tough to chew and digest?

Magic mushrooms (like Psilocybe cubensis) contain chitin, a tough, fibrous polysaccharide also found in insect exoskeletons and crustacean shells.

Humans lack the enzyme (chitinase) to digest it properly, leading to bloating, nausea, or cramping.

And trust me, GI distress is the last thing you want on a psilocybin journey.

A bad stomach can turn a trip into a nightmare.

I’ve had stomach discomfort so bad that it triggered a bad trip—not fun.

And I’ve seen trip-mates with weaker stomachs dry heaving, groaning, and eventually upchucking.

Watching someone else struggle like that? It’s enough to make you feel sick, too.

Fortunately, there are ways to prepare magic mushrooms that make them easier to digest–by breaking down the chitin–provide a smoother onset of effects, and make the experience so much better.

These are the only ways I prepare my magic mushrooms now.

And while today’s focus is on macrodosing, some of these methods work just as well for microdosing.

Here’s how…

The Shroomery: 5 Game-Changing Ways to Prepare Your Magic Mushrooms

1) Shroom Tea: The Smoothest Way to Sip Your Psilocybin

Tea is, hands down, my favorite way to consume teonanácatl—the Nahuatl (Aztec) word for psilocybin mushrooms, meaning “Flesh of the Gods.”

Not only does it help break down the mushrooms for easier digestion, but it also delivers a smoother, faster onset of effects.

Since psilocybin is water-soluble, it extracts easily into hot water, allowing your body to absorb it more quickly.

Instead of waiting around for the trip to kick in, the effects often start within 10 minutes—usually right as I’m finishing my mug.

How to Make Shroom Tea

Ingredients & Equipment

  • 1–5 grams of dried magic mushrooms (adjust dose as needed)
  • 1 cup (250 ml) hot water (not boiling)
  • 1 tea bag (optional, for flavor)
  • Honey, lemon, or ginger (optional, for taste and nausea relief)

Instructions

  1. Grind the Mushrooms – Use a grinder or chop them into small pieces. The finer, the better for extraction.
  2. Heat the Water – Bring water to a boil, then let it cool for about a minute. Boiling water can degrade psilocybin, so aim for 160–175°F (70–80°C).
  3. Steep the Mushrooms – Add the mushrooms to the hot water and let them steep for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add a Tea Bag (Optional) – Ginger, chamomile, or peppermint tea pairs well and helps mask the earthy taste.
  5. Strain and Serve – Use a strainer or cheesecloth to remove solid mushroom bits.
  6. Enhance (Optional) – Add:
    • Honey for sweetness
    • Lemon to convert psilocybin into psilocin (potentially leading to a faster onset)
    • Ginger to help with nausea
  7. Drink and Enjoy – Sip slowly and allow time for the effects to set in, typically within 20–40 minutes.

2) Lemon Tek: A Faster, Stronger Trip with Less Nausea

Lemon Tek is a powerful way to prepare magic mushrooms that may potentiate and accelerate their effects while potentially reducing nausea.

The secret sauce? Citric acid.

Fresh lemon juice helps pre-digest psilocybin, converting it into psilocin (what creates the psychedelic effects) before ingestion.

This mimics the acidic environment of your stomach, leading to a faster onset, potentially stronger experience, and a shorter overall trip.

How to Lemon Tek Magic Mushrooms

Ingredients & Equipment

  • 1–5 grams of dried magic mushrooms (adjust dose as needed)
  • Fresh lemon juice (enough to fully submerge mushrooms, ~1–2 lemons)
  • A small cup or shot glass
  • (Optional) Ginger, honey, or cayenne for taste

Instructions

  1. Grind the Mushrooms – Use a grinder or chop them finely to maximize surface area.
  2. Juice the Lemon – Squeeze fresh lemon juice into a small cup or shot glass.
  3. Soak the Mushrooms – Add the ground mushrooms to the lemon juice, ensuring they’re fully submerged. Stir occasionally.
  4. Let Sit for 15–20 Minutes – This allows the citric acid to break down psilocybin into psilocin, aiding faster absorption.
  5. Drink Quickly – Either swallow everything (including the mushroom bits) or strain them out and drink only the liquid. Some believe straining reduces nausea.
  6. Wait for Effects – Onset is typically 10–30 minutes (faster than traditional ingestion) and may feel more intense but shorter in duration.

3) Shroom Capsules: Convenient, Precise, and Discreet

Capsules are one of the most convenient ways to ingest magic mushrooms, making them a great option for a shroom adventure—whether you're heading into the forest or the concrete jungle of San Francisco (ah, the memories).

While capsules may not be as easy to digest as shroom tea or lemon tek, ground mushrooms in powder form are definitely easier to process than whole, unchewed mushrooms.

However, the downside is that there’s limited space in each capsule, and if you’re aiming for a big dose, you might end up popping quite a few.

For instance, a 00 capsule can hold about 250-500 mg of finely ground psilocybin. So to reach a typical 3.5-gram dose, you’ll need to take anywhere from 7-12 capsules—that’s a lot to swallow!

For this reason, capsules are usually more suited for microdosing, but they can still come in handy for lower macrodoses or when you need a precise, discreet dose.

Pros of Capsules

  • No taste (ideal if you’re not a fan of the flavor)
  • Easy to measure precise doses
  • Longer shelf life

Cons of Capsules

  • Slower onset of effects (usually 30-60 minutes)
  • High number of capsules needed for big doses

How to Make Boomer Capsules

  1. Grind the Mushrooms – Use a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle to turn dried mushrooms into a fine powder.
  2. Fill Capsules – Use a size 0 or 00 capsule and a capsule-filling machine (or fill by hand if you’re doing a small batch).
  3. Store Properly – Keep your capsules in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to preserve potency.

4) Magic Honey (aka Blue Honey): A Sweet Way to Dose

The magic honey method is a unique and ancient-feeling preparation that brings a bit of old-world charm (as if you are brewing mead) into your psychedelic experience.

Known as Blue Honey, this method is an excellent way to preserve magic mushrooms while enhancing their taste and reducing nausea.

The beauty of magic honey is that the honey preserves the mushrooms, masks their earthy flavor, and makes dosing incredibly simple.

You can add this Blue Honey to hot teas (which helps with further extraction and digestion), spread it over a cinnamon bagel, or eat it directly for a potent dose of boomers.

How to Make Blue Honey

Let’s say you want to make a batch of Blue Honey where each tablespoon contains 1 gram of psilocybin mushrooms—here’s how to prepare it accurately:

Ingredients

  • Dried magic mushrooms (finely ground or in small chunks)
  • Raw honey (preferably unpasteurized for better preservation)
  • A glass jar (airtight, such as a Mason jar)

Instructions

  1. Calculate Your Batch Size If you want each tablespoon (21g of honey) to contain 1g of mushrooms:
    • Batch size: 1 cup of honey
    • You’ll need 16g of magic mushrooms and about 336g (3/4 lb) of honey.
    • Tip: Start with a smaller test batch if you want to experiment with smaller amounts.
  2. Grind the Mushrooms – Use a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle to finely grind the mushrooms or chop them into small pieces.
    • Powdered mushrooms mix evenly into the honey, while chunks give you the option to strain later.
  3. Mix the Honey & Mushrooms
    • Pour a small amount of honey into the jar to begin.
    • Add the ground mushroom powder and stir well to prevent clumping.
    • Continue layering and stirring until all the mushrooms are evenly incorporated.
  4. Store & Infuse
    • Seal the jar and store it in a cool, dark place.
    • Let it sit for at least 1-2 weeks, stirring every few days to ensure even mixing.
    • Some people let it sit for up to a month for maximum potency.

Dosage Guide

Since each tablespoon (~21g of honey) contains 1g of mushrooms, adjust accordingly for your desired experience:

  • Microdose (0.1-0.3g): ~¼ to ¾ teaspoon
  • Mild trip (1-1.5g): ~1 to 1.5 tbsp
  • Moderate trip (2-3g): ~2 to 3 tbsp
  • Full 3.5g trip: ~3.5 tbsp

5) Mushroom Coffee (the good kind)

Most mushroom coffees taste like ass, so you might as well make it enjoyable when you drink it (sorry Foursigmatic).

Magic mushroom coffee is a fantastic way to start your day, whether you're microdosing or macrodosing.

Coffee is a prokinetic, meaning it helps with digestion, making it ideal for taking psilocybin.

I use this method when microdosing because I can mix in other herbs and medicinal mushrooms to "stack" my dose.

To give my mushroom coffee a boost, I make it bulletproof—adding coconut oil and grass-fed butter to help absorb the fat-soluble nutrients from the botanicals (and the mushrooms).

For an extra twist, you can use "Blue Honey" instead of dried and ground mushrooms. Just add your infused psilocybin honey to the coffee and enjoy a little sweetness with your day!

Bonus Methods for You:

→ Shroom Smoothie — Want to get your green smoothie on while feeling like both a health nut and a psychonaut?

Add a healthy dose of magic mushrooms to your mix for the best of both worlds!

→ Magic Mushroom Tincture — Tinctures are an excellent way to preserve your magic mushrooms for years, and they make dosing simple if you get your starting ratios right.

While they’re a great option, making tinctures is a bit tricky. Mushrooms typically require a double extraction, as beneficial compounds in the mushroom dissolve in different solvents—water and alcohol.

By using both, you extract a wider range of active compounds, maximizing the potency. This method is best for seasoned medicine makers.

→ Edibles (Chocolate & Gummies) — Got a sweet tooth and can't stand the taste of the above magic mushroom preparations?

Chocolate and gummies are your new best friends. They take about the same time to kick in as raw shrooms but are gentler on the stomach and taste way better.

While preparing them is beyond the scope of this article, you can find them pre-prepared in my Psychedelic Sourcing Bundle.

With a variety of trippy recipes at your fingertips, there's no need to choke down raw, dried shrooms—save that for the mycophiles.

Instead of risking stomach trouble (and a ruined trip), you can reduce nausea, cramping, bloating, and those dreaded 'shroom shits' by preparing your magic mushrooms ahead of time.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

My go-to method? Shroom tea.

Honestly, I’m always amazed at the rapid onset, steady peak, and smooth landing it provides. It’s my favorite and most reliable way to go.

Now, I’m curious—what’s your favorite shroom prep? Or do you just raw-dog it?

If you had to pick from the options I mentioned, which one would be your go-to?

Hit reply and let me know.

See you next Saturday,

Hey friend, In high school, a homie handed me a pill. Adderall. “Try it,” he said. I thought, Why not? Midterms were brutal and I could use the boost. 30 minutes in—heart racing, sweat dripping, mind bouncing like a rabid squirrel. This wasn’t focus... this was chaos. Hours passed. Still wired. Still restless. I tried to sleep but couldn’t. I lay there, staring at the ceiling. This sucked. I thought to myself: "How the hell was this supposed to help me perform better in school?"
